Children must be potty trained for this class
In the Sunshiner classroom, we help to prepare children for kindergarten by supporting their development both academically and socially while having a lot of fun.
We provide a wide variety of materials at various levels of difficulty so children can balance both, a sense of mastery at tasks they can complete easily and challenge themselves with new more complex tasks. We believe that children need to feel safe and secure to learn and flourish in a rich environment full of opportunities to grow and develop their skills for life. Consequently, social skills and independence are an important part of our curriculum. We balance teacher-directed and child-initiated activities to help children learn to follow directions, as well as guide their own learning. We assess children’s skills upon their arrival in our classroom and provide appropriate materials and experiences to lead them to the next level of learning.

Our teachers are intentional in planning and assessing our students’ learning and development. We use the Washington State Early Learning and Developmental Guidelines as our Assessment tool on the Procare App.

When children move onto kindergarten, they need the self-confidence and ability to communicate with other children to work in groups and learn efficiently. We assist children with communication tools to help them resolve their own conflicts in social problem-solving situations. The goal being the ability to work independently at a task, as well as becoming a functional team member in a group project. Friendships are a critical part of a preschooler’s day. We help children develop more sophisticated ways of communicating with each other to build relationships that will carry over into their social interactions in kindergarten where they rely more on their peers for positive feedback and personal validation.
Academic skills are supported at all levels by continual observation and assessment followed by developmentally appropriate experiences that allow children to increase their current skills and master new ones. The materials available to children each day support early reading and math skills, fine and gross motor skills, sensory and art skills, as well as science and imaginative play. Children learn in many ways, so concepts are presented in a variety of ways to reach all learning styles. We develop learning themes by observing what children are interested in and incorporate those topics into our curriculum. By observing the world around, us, we try to make the learning experiences of the day relevant by incorporating weather, seasons, or other current events into our discussions.
At the Shyne School our goal is to provide children with warm and caring relationships with teachers and friends. We encourage active parent participation. When parents feel comfortable with their school and teacher, they can communicate an attitude of trust to their children. There is an amazing amount of growth for children during their preschool years and we help them maximize their learning through games, songs, stories, play and hands-on activities. Parents can stop by and join the fun!
Our school parent handbook is on the Registration Page with full behavior management, curriculum, philosophy and what to bring. In addition, we recommend a wet bag that we can send soiled clothing home in.
